Obituary

Diane Hughes, 83, of Crozet, Virginia, made a peaceful transition on June 7th after a short,
intense fight in the ICU following emergency surgery.

Diane was born in 1938 to Alice Place Hughes and Lawrence Melvin Hughes in Portsmouth,
Virginia. After graduating from Norview High School in 1956, she went on to study nursing at
Maryview Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1959. After graduation, Diane worked at
Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville until she began her family. In 1973, she completed
her Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing at the University of Virginia. She went on to become
an Adult Nurse Practitioner.

In 1953, she met Chuck Hughes, and they wed in 1959, going on to have four children, Sharon,
Steve, Susan, and Sean. When Diane had Sharon, she decided to dedicate her life to being a
fantastic and wonderful mother. Diane excelled at caring for her husband and children and
supporting them through the many passions and difficulties of their lives. Diane worked part time
as a nurse as she raised her family and made it her mission to improve the lives of others. She
was a visiting nurse with the Health Departments in Charlottesville and Albemarle and Nelson
counties.

Diane was a passionate canner, cook, seamstress, knitter and hiked in many states and
countries, and when she wasn't filling her home with warmth and kindness, or growing her herb
garden, she could be found reading. We will miss her greatly.

Diane was predeceased by her parents and her brother Larry. She is survived by her husband
of 62 years, Charles Stevenson Hughes; her brother and sisters: Billie Hughes Locke and partner David) of
Bracey, VA, Joseph Hughes (Connie), of New Bern, NC, Kathleen Hughes Meyer (Rick) also of
New Bern, NC, and Alexis Hughes Mahon (Richard) of Edenton, NC; her children: Sharon
Hughes Taylor of Charlottesville, VA, Steve Hughes (Jamie) of Crozet, VA, Susan Hughes
Hilleary (Jim) of Marshall, VA, and Sean Eoghan Hughes (Wanchi) of Ivy, VA; her grandchildren:
Lisa, Mary, Rachel, Patrick, Hannah, Charles, Jacob, and Haley; and nine great grandchildren.

The family requests that donations be sent to the Daughters of Wisdom, the Sisters who taught

her nursing and nurtured her into adulthood. (Sister Catherine Sheehan, 385 Ocean Avenue,
Islip, NY 11751, or call 631-277-2660), or to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Greenwood Virginia
(7599 Rockfish Gap Turnpike, Greenwood VA 22943.

There will be a celebration of life service and reception on July 23rd, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Greenwood.
