Gladys Ruth Wesner, 87, of Crozet, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 20, 2013. She was born on February 5, 1926, in Odin, Illinois, daughter of the late Asa Oren McClelland and Martha Alice Meredith McClelland. She was preceded in death by her son, Gary Wesner and brothers, Paul, Hubert, David, and Willis McClelland.
Ruth was born and raised in the rural community of Odin, Illinois. She attended the one room Barr School through the eighth grade. After graduating from Sandoval High School in 1943, Ruth embarked on a brief career of dressmaking.
During WW2, she corresponded with her future husband, Charles Wesner while he was deployed n the Pacific theater on the U.S.S. Gilbert Island. Ruth and Charles were married on August 24, 1946 at Bethel Baptist Church. They moved to Crozet , Virginia in 1956 and raised five children in the home that they built..
Ruth was married to Charles R. Wesner for 67 years, and her devotion to the family was indescribable. Her love for her children and grandchildren could be seen every day of her life. She showed her love by participating in her children's activities; serving as Den Mother for Scouts and supporting the Crozet Village Club swim team for many year. She loved having her family come together every year at Myrtle Beach for Vacation and enjoyed watching her growing brood of grandchildren ride the waves and collect seashells on her long walks to the pier. Ruth was known for her baking and cooking skills and there was always a pie, cake, or cookies to finish the family meal. She was an avid collector of teapots, recipes, and falling leaves.
In addition to taking care of her children, husband, and home, Ruth was an active member of Crozet Baptist Church . Her strong faith and love for the Lord was expressed through God's Word. While her children were young, she worked in the children's ministry and later taught in adult Sunday Scho9ol class for many years,. She shared her faith by teaching Precept Bible Study classes in the community and was a member of the Crozet Home Demonstration Club.
She is survived by her husband Charles R. Wesner, and her children; son Ron Wesner and his wife Debora, daughter Kathy Maskell, daughter Sherry Lawson and her husband Larry, and daughter Laura Shiflett and her husband Gary She leaves behind nine grandchildren; Michael,Craig, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Scott,Zachary, Reinald, Christine,and Matthew.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:00 p.m.Friday, November 22, 2013 at Anderson Funeral Home in Crozet. A graveside service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 23 m 2013 at Rockgate Cemetery in Crozet by Pastor David Collyer. Family and friends may view
