John Patterson Haden, 83, formerly of Batesville, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2015. Pat was born October 23, 1931 in Crozet, Virginia, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Allen Haden Jr. Pat and his older brother Al grew up working in their father's
peach orchard, hunting and fishing on their farm in Albemarle County, and in general, worrying their mother Sue. Pat graduated from Lane High School where he played football and met his future wife, the former Jessie Key Carr. He graduated from Virginia Tech ('54) with a degree in Engineering and was a member of the Corps of Cadets. He
remained a Tech fan his entire life. Good seasons and bad. He served in the U.S. Army, 11th Airborne Division during the Korean conflict. He spent his career as an engineer with DuPont and Alcoa Industries, retiring to work on his farm in 1998.
An active outdoorsman, he hunted, fished, hiked, raced stock cars, and competed in the demolition derby. He taught his children and grandchildren to shoot straight, the value of well-maintained machinery, and the comfort of a good dog.
He loved the Blue Ridge Mountains, his dogs, pet raccoons, engineering challenges, Alaska, the Grand Canyon, bluegrass music, elk bugling, dogs baying, horses, and a good chase of any kind. He was a former Scout Master of Troop 79 from Crozet. He was a member of the Rocky Mountain National Elk Foundation and a merit award winner from
the Nature Conservancy of Virginia.
He is survived by his brother, C. Allen Haden III and his wife Loretta, of Williamsburg, His former wife, Jessie Carr Haden of Batesville, and his three children and their families; Mr. and Mrs. G. Allen Haden, Curtis and Wyatt, of Flagstaff, Arizona; Mr. and Mrs. Allen A. Cunningham, Haden and Thomas, of Greenwood; Mr. and Mrs. Jesse W. Haden,
Emmet and John Carr, of Charlottesville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation, or choose to take a walk in a National Forest in his memory. The family will hold a memorial service Sunday, February 22, 2015, at 2 o'clock, The Lodge at Old Trail, 330 Claremont Lane, Crozet, Virginia
