Nancy Garth Small departed this life on Saturday August 29, 2026 at Martha Jefferson House where she lived for the past 8 years.

Born August 28, 1930 in Charlottesville, VA , as a daughter of Walter Martin Garth and Margaret Coleman Garth. In1971 she married Rudolph V. Small and shared 30 years of marriage.

Nancy taught at Albemarle High School and Western Albemarle High School as a Business Administrator teacher and retired in 1991. She graduated from Rockfish Valley High School in Nellysford, VA; earned a Bachelor’s Degree in education from James Madison College and a Master’s Degree from Old Dominion University. She was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority.

Nancy was always interested in politics, enjoyed gardening, reading and visiting with her friends and family. She was known as a very honest and out-spoken person, letting you know exactly how she felt about you, politics, and other topical issues.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Rudolph and cousin Jay Strafford. Those remaining to celebrate her life well lived include; stepson Rudy V Small, wife Dinah, Grandchildren; Kelly Small Via, Andy Small, finance Belinda Via, Jaime Small, husband Garrick Gupton, two great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, and Cousin Jack Strafford.

Nancy attended Rockfish Presbyterian church in Nellysford, Va. The family will receive friends and family from 1:00 pm to 2:00 PM at the church on Thursday September 10 in the social hall, 5016 Rockfish Valley Hwy, Nellysford, VA. Following visitation, the funeral service will be in the sanctuary of the church at 2:00 pm with Rev. Louie Andrews officiating. Burial will follow.

Active Pallbearers and Flower Bearers will be Family and Friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Nancy’s name to Hospice of the Piedmont or Martha Jefferson Employee Christmas Fund.

We would like to thank the dedicated workers at Martha Jefferson House who took care of Nancy with compassion and great care during her last 8 years. She always thought of you not as workers but her special friends. Also, a special thanks to Hospice of the Piedmont for their dedicated care for Nancy during her final days.

A quote from Nancy. “The future is uncertain, for sure”, (with a smile) “I don’t know how it will end, and while I don’t expect a happy, delightful end, I hope it will be ok.” Nancy departed from this world peacefully.
