Patricia Diane Godfrey Figgatt, 91, of Charlottesville, Va. died on Thursday, August 29th, 2024 at the University of Virginia Hospital. She was born on October 24, 1932, in Berwyn, Maryland to the late Dr. Albert Barney Godfrey and Alice Lallage Greene Godfrey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Winfield Schley Figgatt, Jr. and one sister, Barbara Carolyn Godfrey.
She is survived by her brother, Dr. Albert Blanton Godfrey and wife Judith, of Fuquay-Varina, N.C.; six children, Debbie Sprouse and husband, Lynn, of Harrisonburg, Va., Mike Figgatt and wife, Carolyn, of Madison Heights, Va., Bret Figgatt and wife, Paula, of Waynesboro, Va., Wendy Marks and husband, Jeff, of Waynesboro, Va., Laurie Roberts and husband, Dave of Palmyra, Va., and Patrick Figgatt and wife, Shelly of Archdale, NC., and a special "adopted" Daughter, Robyn Price of Troy, Va.; and seventeen grandchildren, Michelle Berra, Amanda Morris, Taylor Sprouse, Amberlyn Akins, Amy Shepard, Christopher Figgatt, Meredith Puddington, Jack Figgatt, Kelly Tinsley ,Will Tinsley, Karina Roberts Rogers, Devin Roberts, Alex Figgatt, Kathryn Figgatt, Ellis Logan, Heidi Logan Saunders, and Nancy Carrie Logan; and 15 great grandchildren.
She graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.S. in Education and taught elementary school at Waterman School in Harrisonburg, Va. She began teaching baton lessons while a majorette in the band at U of M. In Harrisonburg, she established her first group, the Harrisonburg Twirlettes. Later, she moved to Crozet, Va, and established and led the Virginia Twirlettes. She taught for 65 years and her students performed in local parades and competitions all over the U.S. including performances at college arenas and NFL stadiums. She was inducted into the Baton Twirling Hall of Fame in 2003.
She also worked as a secretary for radio stations WINA./WQMZ, was an administrative assistant at Ash Lawn Highland, and became the chairman of volunteers' in the Pediatrics unit at the University Medical Center.
Music was one of her many talents. She sang in the Crozet Baptist Church choir, the Charlottesville Light Opera Company, and at the Senior Center. She also was the children's choir director at Harrisonburg Baptist Church and Crozet Baptist Church.
"Patty", as known by friends, resided at Morningside Assisted Living for the last several years of her life. She had many special friends, including her tablemates, Ellen and Janice, and was loved by all the staff and the residents. Her family is very grateful for the quality of care that was provided, and the many activities offered that filled her days.
Family will receive friends at Anderson Funeral Home (5888 St. George Ave.) in Crozet from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 4th. The funeral will be held Thursday, September 5th at 12 p.m. at Crozet Baptist Church (5804 St. George Ave.), with Rev. David Collyer officiating Everyone is invited to a luncheon afterwards at the church. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Crozet Baptist Church or the Local SPCA.
