Obituary

Patricia Louise (Schick) Young died peacefully on May 10, 2019 at The Heritage Inn in Charlottesville, VA.  She was born on May 6, 1932 to Verne and Marguerite Schick in Washington, DC.

From a young age it was clear that Pat was determined and bright.  After graduating top of her class from Central High School, she earned a degree in Geography at George Washington University.  While a member of GWU's sailing club, she met her future husband, Robert Norman Young, the manager at Buzzard Point Boat Yard in Washington, DC.  They married on July 14, 1956.  In the same year, she began her career at the Central Intelligence Agency where she worked until the birth of her first child, Carl James, in August of 1959.  Shortly thereafter, Bob and Pat welcomed their daughter, Anna Louise, in April of 1961.  She was a wonderful stay-at-home mother until returning to her career at the CIA in 1969 where she honorably served until retirement in 1993.

In retirement, Bob and Pat enjoyed seeing their grandchildren and split time between their beautiful homes on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Charleston, South Carolina.  They enjoyed good company, and over the years graciously hosted many close friends and family members.

Pat leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, beauty, and advocacy for all creatures, both big and small.  She excelled in her studies and built a successful career during a time when women were generally not encouraged to do so. She believed firmly in the equitable treatment of all people.  A lover of mother nature, Pat found great joy in tending  her gardens.  She always made things beautiful; a home, an elegant table, flowers by the bedside, and her garden.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Robert N. Young.  She is survived by her brother, James Verne Schick; two children, Carl James Young and Anna Young Rossberg; seven grandchildren, Emily, Eric and Andrew Young and Daniel, Molly, Katie, Maggie Rossberg; and two nephews, Mike and Greg Schick.

A celebration of her life will take place on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at Ivy Creek Methodist Church in Charlottesville,VA at 1:00 pm
