Obituary

In Loving Memory of Ronald Lee Shifflett Sr.

Ronald Lee Shifflett Sr., beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away at his residence on July 16, 2025, at the age of 88, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 18, 1936, to the late Jacob Floyd and Edith Morris Shifflett.

He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Joyce (Bert) Wood Shifflett; one son, Ronald (Hank) Lee Shifflett Jr.; one son-in-law, Jimmie Rosson Sr.; one daughter-in-law, Pam Shifflett; three brothers, Marshall, Glen, and Jacob Shifflett; one sister, Carolyn Shifflett; and two spoiled fur babies, Christy and Mindy.  He is survived by his two sons, Gregory (Greg) Allen Shifflett and Timothy (Buck) Wayne Shifflett; two daughters, Elizabeth (Runt) S. Rosson (Phil Adkins) and Tammy S. Seal (Dougie); four grandsons, Jimmie (Jimbo) Rosson (Sarah), Kevin Rosson, Douglas Seal III, and Cory Shifflett; four great grandchildren, Katelynn Rosson (Corey Bosselman), Alicia Vestal (Justin), Emaleigh Rosson, and Wyatt Rosson; four great-great grandchildren, Jackson and Nora Bosselman, and Olivia and Eliza Vestal.

He is also survived by ten sisters: Elsie Bryant, Stella Roach, Joyce Thompson (Tommy), Margie Sims, Doris Brown, Judy Shifflett, Wanda Snead (Buddy), Glenda Tate, Brenda Small (Dougie Pugh), and Sandy Morris (James); and two brothers, Charles Shifflett and Michael Shifflett.

A lifelong resident of Crozet, he was a man known for his deep love of family, his strong roots in the community, and his generous, light-hearted spirit.

He truly never met a stranger. Whether he was making his rounds through Crozet—visiting Mint Springs, Whistlestop, or dropping in on family—he was always quick with a smile, a story, or a joke told so straight-faced it would catch you off guard. His sense of humor and warm heart left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Ronald took great pride in his work, devoting 38 years of service to and eventually retired from Con-Agra (Morton's Frozen Foods/Del Monte) in 1998. During his time there, he continued his career at Bank of America, from which he retired in 1997.

He found joy in the simple pleasures of life: hunting with the boys, riding around with Kevin looking for deer, Sunday mornings at the flea market in Waynesboro, chatting with old friends and new faces alike. He especially treasured his weekend outings to the Stoney Creek Resort and Campground with Beth and Phil, where he enjoyed playing bingo, listening to live bluegrass music, attending the Wounded Warriors Freedom Festival, and building many friendships over the years.

His greatest pride was his garden, which he tended with great care and joy. The vegetables he grew weren't just beautiful—they were shared generously with friends and family. It was often said that no one could grow a garden quite like his.

A lifelong Orioles fan, he delighted in trips to Maryland to cheer on his team with family. Closer to home, he loved catching UVA games with Jimbo, always savoring the thrill of the game and fellowship that came with it.

He will be remembered for his kindness, his humor, and the way he made everyone feel like family. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and homegrown tomatoes—and will be deeply missed by all who had the joy of knowing him.

The family will receive friends at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, July 26, 2025, from 4 until 6 p.m., followed by a casual gathering at Whistlestop. A private service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911 (www.hopva.org).
