Warren Charles Smith (Age 81)
Of Charlottesville, VA, and formerly of New Bern, NC and Alexandria, VA, passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at Albemarle Health and Rehab Center in Charlottesville. He was the loving husband of Mary Rebecca (Lament) Smith, whom he married September 20, 1959. Born December 14, 1935 in Sylvania, OH, he was the son of the late Charles and Ethel (McDowell) Smith. Warren was also predeceased by two brothers, G. Ross Smith and Kent Smith. Warren grew up in western Ohio and graduated from Elida High School in 1953. He received his BA degree in Physical Education from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1957. He received his Masters in Physical Education from Kent State University in 1971. He proudly served in the United States Air Force Reserves. Warren spent his entire 38 year career with the Veteran's Administration (VA), last serving as a Program Director in Rehabilitation in Washington D.C. There, he coordinated the Kinesiotherapy programs for all VA hospitals, and helped design and lead the VA's driver training program. He loved woodworking, antique tools, carving, drawing, Native American history and singing in the church choir. He was an enthusiastic family historian, chronicled through words and pictures. After he retired in 1996, he volunteered at Huntley Meadows Park in Alexandria, VA, traveled to parts of the US and Europe, and spent time with his sons and grandchildren. He was also an active member of Civitan. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Bradley David Smith (Laura) of Crozet, VA and Matthew Charles Smith (Beth) of Walkerton, VA; one sibling, Lisle Smith (Patty) of Piqua, OH; and five grandchildren, Megan, Kylie, Adam, Carina and Quinn. A private memorial service will be held in Alexandria, VA at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Garber United Methodist Church, 4201 Country Club Road, New Bern, NC 28562; or to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1301 Collingwood Road, Alexandria, VA 22308.
