Obituary

Wesley Thomas Helmbrecht was born on October 26, 2001 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and passed away at UVA hospital on February 21, 2026.

Wesley's "credentials" do not include the ones we normally see in obituaries. His "profession" was loving people. He loved his family and friends. His specialty was spreading joy with an infectious laugh and "shakey" hugs. His communication style wasn't what you would call "typical." His language was love and he could feel you a mile away. His life's purpose and mission was to love as much and as deeply as possible. His limitations didn't define him. He instead was measured by his extraordinary capacity for love and sharing his joy which never relented and never will.

Wesley was the purest of souls. His laugh could light up any room and he gave the best hugs. He knew no strangers and everyone was his friend. If you were ever in the vicinity of his unconditional love you left changed. Wesley loved music, dancing, and food. Most of all, he loved his family and friends.

After graduating from the Virginia Institute of Autism in 2023 Wesley was able to spend his days in his favorite place, with his family. He was obsessed with Buc-ees and eating pudding. He loved going to malls and shopping at Walmart. He was the best dancer.

Wesley is preceded by his father, Gary Helmbrecht, Grandfather George T. Crum. He leaves behind countless true friends. He is survived by his mother, Jocelynn, stepfather, Steve; Grandmother Remie Crum; Great Aunt Dolores Wiseman; Great Aunt Cris Klika (Phelps) Grandmother Karen Mills; Brothers Emerson, Nathan, Chris (Audrey, baby Chloe) and Aaron; and Sister Leah; his step siblings Steve and Elayna Easton; Uncle Mark and Aunt Lindsey Easton; cousin Markie Easton; long time care giver Leanne Evers; and more beloved extended family.

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the UVA MICU team of medical professionals for their extraordinary compassion and care. To our special needs community, our care givers, the Arc of the Piedmont, Virginia Institute of Autism and associated professionals who showed love and support along the way; we are forever grateful for your hard work, love, and support throughout the years.
